The 2015 vintage is "a great year for Pomerol," according to Alexandre Thienpont of Vieux Chateau Certan, whose vineyard is one of the most prominent in the appellation.

"The cabernet francs are at the level of the merlots," he said Friday during a tasting at the estate. "It's very rare" to have both grape varieties attain such quality levels in the same vintage.

Vintages such as 2009 and 2010 were noted for the quality of their merlot, while cabernet franc shone in 2011. For the 2015 vintage being shown to the trade over the past week, "you have the merlot of 2010 and the cabernet franc of 2011," he said.
